Summary

The scientist have successfully traced the origin of scalloped hammerhead shark fins sold in a Hong Kong fish market. Some of the sharks were found in areas far from Hong Kong.

The scientist compared DNA samples taken form live scalloped hammerheads in western Atlantic and DNA samples taken form shark fins in Hong Kong fish market. the data as well as the other research have shown that the market fins came from populations in Atlantic and Indo-Pacific, places where the shark has been categorized as endangered.

The earlier work done by the scientist have also shown that up to 73 million sharks are killed every year to supply the fin markets. Although Educational campaigns in Asia about ecosystem threats, stopping the decreasing numbers of sharks population remains challenging, traditional cultures are hard to change and it takes time to make changes. The Banning of the sale of shark fins is also an impossible mission for now.
